The Thing About Nostalgia

There's something about nostalgia that I always find myself coming back to. The most engaging conversations I've had are almost always about each other's pasts, whether someone was shaped by the Tamagotchi era or the Webkinz era. We all had something we held onto.

It's those little nuggets of nostalgia we're drawn to and want to share.

You see it in someone tearing up refurbished floors and excitedly uncovering the character underneath, or watching Jacksonville's Adventure Landing get demolished to rubble, once a summer day hotspot, now a distant memory. It shows up differently for everyone, but the feeling is the same.

A lot of us wouldn't mind going back to the nights walking around in costumes with pillowcases full of candy (was anyone else Spiderman for four years in a row, or just me?), pulling that first reckless all-nighter, finally finding balance without training wheels. There was this wonder about it, this exploration of new things and experiences we didn't know we'd treasure forever.

That wonder, that feeling, it all comes back to the act of cherishing, whether it's moments in time or things we hold close. This act is what brings us together. You learn a lot about someone through it. Their favorite childhood cartoon tells you more about who they are than their star sign ever could.

Here's what I keep coming back to: that wonder doesn't have to live only in the past. At its core, nostalgia isn't really about going back. It's about recognizing what mattered. And if you know what mattered then, you can choose to make things matter now. Try that new place you've been eyeballing. Pick up the hobby you keep putting off. Or maybe your office just needs a new Tamagotchi. Don't wait to recognize what matters. Some of your best memories are still in progress.
